Hello, Im Emma from mmmEnglish!

In this lesson, Ill go over five common idioms that sound very similar, their meaning is also very similar.

大家好,我是Emma,欢迎来到Emma的美味英语!

在本节课程中,我们将会学习五个常用的习语,它们听起来非常相似,意思同样也非常相似。

Theyre all about change. But the way that we use each of them in English is a little different.

它们都是关于改变的。但是我们在英文中使用它们的方式有一点点不同。

In some of my previous lessons like this one, I explained why idioms are important and what strategies you can use to learn them and remember them.

Idioms can be a little tricky to learn, but theyre fun to use and they definitely make English more interesting and more entertaining.

在我之前的一些类似的课程中,我解释过为什么习语这么重要,以及你可以使用什么策略来学习和记忆这些习语。

习语学起来可能有点点复杂,但是使用它们是非常好玩的,而且它们能够让英文更加有趣,更加生动。

This lesson is an advanced lesson, one that will teach you the subtle differences between some very similar idioms.

It will help you to use them correctly and sound more natural like a native English speaker.

本节课程是高级课程,它能够教会你相似的习语之间细微的差别。

它能够帮助你正确地使用它们,而且听起来更加自然,更加像英语母语者。

Now my advice with learning idioms is always to think about a situation in your own life where the meaning of the idiom is relevant so you can associate the idiom with a memory or an experience that you have.

Its gonna help you to remember the idiom but it will also mean you can use the idiom whenever you talk about that memory or that experience in English.

好的,我给大家的学习习语的建议永远是想象在你生活中和这个习语的意思有关的场景,这样的话,你就可以将习语和你的一段记忆或者是一段经历相联系。

这能够帮助你记忆习语,但是这也意味着你只要你用英语谈论那段记忆或者经历的时候,你都可以使用这个习语。

Super cool, right? Okay, so in this lesson, were focusing on idioms with the word change.

听起来很棒,是吧?好的,所以呢在本节课程中,我们专攻和改变有关的习语。

Now something my dear dad used to tell me is that change is the only constant in life.

Its the one thing that stays the same.

我亲爱的爸爸曾经告诉过我的一件事情是,生活中处处充满改变。

只有改变才是永远不变的。

Everything around us is changing. Our lives change, we change.

我们周围的一切都在改变。我们的生活在改变,我们也在改变。

So these idioms are super relevant and helpful so that you can express yourself.

When we move to a new house or we start a new job, we meet new people, things change.

所以这些习语和我们的生活息息相关,也非常有用,能够帮助你表达你自己。

当我们搬到新家或者是开始一份新工作的时候,当我们遇见新的人,事情都在改变。

As we grow older, we change.

As certain things happen in our lives, we also change.

当我们慢慢长大的时候,我们在改变。

我们生活中发生不同的事情,我们也在改变。

Change isnt always easy but being able to talk about it in English should be.

So lets start with to change your mind.

改变并不总是很简单的,但是能够用英文来谈论改变应该是很简单的。

所以让我们以改变心意开始吧。

Now its a common one, one that youve probably heard before.

Its used when you make a decision or you form an opinion thats different to the one that you first had.

这是个非常常见的习语,你可能以前早就听说过。

当你做决定的时候,或者是形成一个和之前的观点不同的想法的时候,都可以使用这个习语。

I was going to travel to Europe in September but Ive changed my mind, Im going to go to Asia instead.

When I first met Paul, I thought he was odd but now that Ive got to know him a little better, Ive changed my mind!

我本来打算在九月份去欧洲旅行,但是我改变了主意,想去亚洲。

当我第一次遇见保罗的时候,我觉得他蛮奇怪的,但是随着现在和他慢慢熟络,我改变了自己的想法!

I think he was probably just shy when I first met him.

Have you changed your mind about something recently?

我觉得当我第一次遇见他的时候,他应该是太害羞了。

你最近有改变对某件事情的看法吗?

Perhaps about a holiday or maybe even your plans for the weekend.

Perhaps youve changed your mind about somebody, youve changed your opinion about them.

可能是关于一次假期,或者是你对周末的计划。

可能你改变了对于某个人的看法,你改变了对他们的想法。

If you can think of something, tell me about it, write a sentence in the comments so I can check it for you.

Maybe you always wanted to study in America but now youve decided you want to study in Australia.

如果你能想到的话,那就和我说说吧,在评论中造个句子,我就可以给你检查啦。

可能你一直想去美国学习,但是现在你决定你想去澳大利亚学习。

Perhaps youve changed your mind. So that was change your mind.

可能你改变了主意。那就是改变心意。

What about to change your tune or a change of heart? a change of scene? a change of pace?

Now all of these idioms are similar but the way that we use them is slightly different, something that you need to understand and you need to pay attention to if you want to sound natural when youre speaking English.

那改变看法、改变心意、改变环境和改变习惯呢?

所有的这些习语都很相似,但是我们使用它们的方式是有细微不同的,如果你想让自己说的英语更加自然的话,有些方面你需要理解并且关注。

To change your tune is usually used when someones opinion changes or someones behaviour changes and usually its from a negative to a positive one.

So imagine that you have a colleague whos been complaining about your boss for months.

当某个人的看法改变了,或者是某个人的行为改变了,一般是使用改变看法这个习语,它一般是从负面的方面转变到积极的方面。

想象一下你有一位同事,抱怨你老板好几个月了。

They dont get on well together, they disagree on most things and your colleague can be quite stubborn about it.

But suddenly, your colleague comes into the office and starts saying that your boss is really nice and that hes really great to work with.

他们相处并不融洽,他们在大多数事情上看法都不一致,而且你的同事非常固执。

但是突然之间,你的同事走进办公室,开始说你的老板人超级好,和他一起工作非常愉快。

He even goes and gets him a coffee every morning and you think "Youve really changed your tune!"

Theyve changed their opinion and theyve changed the way that they behave around this person.

他甚至每天早晨会去给他冲咖啡,你在想你真的改变了看法啊!

他们改变了他们的一些想法,以及对待这个人的方式。

This whole year Ive been trying to convince Shah, my fiance, to go on a holiday and hes been saying "No, its too expensive we cant afford it!"

But last night he came home and he said he wanted to buy tickets to Tokyo and I thought "Hmm hes really changed his tune."

整整一年我都在努力说服我的未婚夫沙阿去度假,但是他一直在说不行,太贵了,我们负担不起啊!

但是昨天晚上他回家之后告诉我他想买去东京的机票,我在想呃,他真的改变了主意呢。

His opinion about the holiday has completely changed. Hes changed his tune.

他关于度假的看法完全改变了。他改变了主意。

Now a change of heart is slightly different. You can see that its treated like a noun phrase.

下面是改变心意,有一点点不同。你可以看到它是作为名字短语使用的。

Its always a change of heart and its usually singular.

And this idiom is about a change in attitude.

永远都是改变心意,一般都是单数形式。

这个习语是关于态度改变的。

A change in the way that you feel about something.

So imagine that you found a dress and its perfect to wear to your friends wedding.

是你对于某件事情感觉的改变。想象一下你发现了一条裙子,穿去你朋友的婚礼非常合适。

Its gorgeous, you love it, but youre not sure if its going to go with the shoes that youve already got at home.

Youre not sure if you should buy it.

它超级超级华丽,你超级喜欢它,但是你不确定和家里的鞋搭不搭。

你不确定是否应该买这条裙子。

But the shop assistant says "If you have a change of heart, you can return it tomorrow."

Now be careful that you dont use this idiom in the same way as the previous ones.

但是店员说如果你改变心意的话,明天可以再来的。

注意哦,这个习语的使用方式和前一个不太一样。

You cant say "He changed his heart" or "I changed my heart".

It doesnt work, its not the same, it sounds a bit weird.

你不能说He changed his heart,或者是I changed his heart。

这不行的哦,这并不是相同的,听起来有点点奇怪。

Its usually used with the verb have. He had a change of heart.

它一般都是和动词have一起使用。他改变心意了。

She will probably have a change of heart.

I still remember when I was eighteen years old and I moved out of my family home.

她可能会改变心意的。

我还记得当我十八岁的时候,从我父母家里搬出来。

I was moving into an apartment with some friends in the city and as I was saying goodbye to my parents, I started feeling really sad that I was leaving so my mum said, "Well if you have a change of heart and you decide to move back home, youll always be welcome." which made me feel a lot better about leaving.

Now speaking of moving house, we have our next idiom, a change of scene or a change of scenery.

我和父母告别,和我的一些朋友搬进了城市里的另外一个公寓,我开始真正地感觉到有点伤心,因为这次是真的离开了,所以我的妈妈说如果你改变心意,想要搬回家的话,我们一直向你敞开怀抱,这句话让我对离开这件事情不那么伤心了。

好的,说到搬家,那让我们聊聊一个新的习语吧,那就是改变环境。

And this idiom is used when you move to different surroundings, you know, a different environment.

It could be used to talk about where you live or where you work.

当你搬到不同的地方,就是全新的环境中的时候,就可以使用这个习语。

当谈论你居住的地方和你工作的地方的时候,就可以使用这个习语。

Tim was tired of working at his fathers company. He wanted a change of scene so he applied for a job in Sydney.

蒂姆对在他父亲的公司工作感到非常厌烦。

他想要换个环境,所以他申请了悉尼的一份新工作。

Im so tired of this little, tiny town. Ive been living here for twelve years.

我对这个小城市厌烦了。

我在这里生活了十二年了。

I need a change of scenery! Im going to move to New York.

我需要换个环境!我要搬到纽约去。

A change of pace is used in a similar way.

It talks about a change from your normal, daily routine, so you can use it to say that you need to try something different for a while.

改变习惯的用法也差不多。

它说的是改变你例行的日常,所以你可以使用这个习语来说你需要一下不同的东西。

A change from what youre used to.

If youre not feeling very inspired by English these days or very motivated to practise, perhaps you need a change of pace.

从你习惯的东西中脱离出来。

如果你最近学英语的斗志不太高昂,没什么动力进行练习的话,可能你需要改变一下节奏了。

You could travel to another country where you have to use your English and practise more.

So there you have it!

你可以去一个必须使用英语的国家旅行,进行练习。

我们到这里就全部讲完啦!

Five useful idioms all about change, ones that all have very similar meanings but are used slightly differently.

You can be confident using any of them with any native English speakers from all English-speaking countries.

这五个习语全都是关于改变的,它们的意思大同小异,但是用法非常不同。

你可以充满自信地对来自所有说英语国家的英语母语者使用这些习语。

Theyre really useful ones to learn because theyre so common.

The best way to understand the difference between them is to practise using them.

学习它们非常有用,因为它们非常常见。理解它们之间差异的最好的方式就是使用它们进行练习。

So get down in the comments and write a few sentences using these idioms for me. Ill let you know if you need to change them or rewrite them in any way.

所以呢,去评论区用这几个习语造几个句子吧。如果你需要改写的话,我会告诉你们的。

Dont be shy. If you change your mind about your sentence, you can always edit your comment later.

不要害羞哦。如果改变了对你造的句子的想法的话,你可以再进行修改。

If you enjoyed learning new ways to talk about change in this lesson, I want to recommend a book for you Whered you go Bernadette?

Its a funny entertaining book about a mother who goes missing before a family trip to Antarctica and it offers countless opportunities to use the idioms that you learned in this lesson and to think about change generally throughout our lives.

如果你喜欢本节课程用新的方法来谈论改变的话,那我想推荐给大家一本书,那就是《伯纳黛特你去哪了》。

这是本非常有趣、非常搞笑的书,是关于一位妈妈,在全家去南极旅行之前走丢了的故事,它里面有很多机会可以使用你的本节课程中学到的这些习语,也提供了很多机会,让我们思考生活中的改变。
